WorldviewU
Mission Statement
The mission of WorldviewU is three-fold:
-
Increase your understanding of the world's major worldviews and
cultures.
-
Raise your awareness of your own belief system.
-
Promote better understanding of people who have different, or even,
opposing belief systems.
As stated by Diane Moore in
her book Overcoming Religious Illiteracy, there are several
important reasons for learning about religion:"…without a basic
understanding of the beliefs, symbols, literature and practices related
to the world’s religious traditions, much of history and culture is
rendered incomprehensible… Knowledge of the basic tenets and structures of the world’s religions
is essential…in our increasingly pluralistic age."1
A better understanding of other people has the following benefits:
- Breaks down barriers
that exist between individuals and between groups of people.
- Leads to the
acceptance of other people. This doesn't mean you need to always
agree with others. It is possible for two or more people to
peacefully coexist, even when they have differing beliefs.
- Leads to better
relationships at school, at work and in the community.
Our hope is that WorldviewU makes you think. As you use WorldviewU
resources, think about the following questions:
- What is your
worldview?
- If your worldview
doesn’t neatly fit into one of the major worldview categories, what
do you believe about life, death and God?
- Why do you believe
what you believe?
- What has influenced
the development of your beliefs?
- What do you believe
about other people who look, act or think differently from you?
- How have those beliefs affected
your attitudes, words and actions?
Welcome
to WorldviewU. May you see yourself and the world through new eyes!
